Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is bordered on the north by Kazakhstan, on the east by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and on the south by Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Its territory is characterized by the Turanian lowland. In the eastern and north-eastern portion rise the mountains of the Tian Shan and the Pamir, while in the central-northern belt there is one of the largest deserts in the world: the Kyzylkum desert. Climate Change, in the country, is being felt through the increase in temperatures and the intensification of extreme meteorological phenomena.

On January 24, 2019, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the then Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea, (now MASE), and the State Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed a bilateral cooperation agreement in the fields of vulnerability to climate change, risk assessment, adaptation and mitigation.

Intervention areas:

• analysis of the impact of climate change on the environment and potentially vulnerable sectors of the economy;
• support to the implementation, monitoring and communication of Nationally Determined Contributions, (NDCs);
• reduction of biodiversity loss, restoration of flora and fauna, processing of biological waste for the bioenergy production;
• enhancement of capacities for the implementation of Mechanisms under the UNFCCC and of the documents related to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
• sustainable use of natural resources;
• stimulating and dissemination of the economic and technological transformation towards a low-carbon economy and a green economy;
• promotion of energy efficiency and development of the use of renewable energies;
• capacity building for climate change adaptation at national and local levels;
• development of public education and awareness campaigns on environmental protection, mitigation and adaptation to climate change;
• monitoring of air quality and land quality;
• integrated management of ecosystems in water bodies and coastal areas;
• sustainable management of protected areas;
• integrated waste management.
